money for beginners

We had a really good Financial Literacy lesson in my Beginner class today. We started off with a worksheet from the F.R.E.E. workbook. The students had to match money words to their numbers. Then I brought in a whole lot of change and dollar bills and asked each student to give me various amounts of money. After they got good at that, we had a pretend store. For example, I would say, this book costs $1.58. Give me $2.00 (in bills). Now count out how much change you should get back. They really enjoyed it and learned a lot.

  1. I have to start thinking about Financial Literacy goal for my 3 levels of students: Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced. I thing that for my Beginners class, the first thing I want them to learn is to be comfortable handling American money, to count American money and to be able to do simple transactions with American money. That is why I think the idea of a class store is such a good idea.
For my Intermediate and Advanced students, I would like to follow the curriculum in the F.R.E.E. workbook, with a special focus on budgeting (in depth), more practice handling checks and registers, and use and abuse of credit cards.

  2. It's really great to see FREE in action. It's hard to find simple and clear financial literacy materials for beginners- Cathay Reta did such a nice job with this workbook.
